Seoul – The escalation between North Korea and South Korea has reached a new peak. North Korea fired 200 artillery shells near two South Korean islands on January 5, 2024.
The aggressive action, lasting for 2 hours, led South Korea to evacuate residents near the border. The firing of 200 shells took place on Friday morning from 09:00 to 11:00 local time.
The South Korean Ministry of Defense stated that North Korea had triggered “provocative actions.” It warned Pyongyang to immediately cease such actions.
“This is a provocative action that threatens peace on the Korean Peninsula,” emphasized the ministry.
North Korea’s actions were triggered by joint military exercises conducted by South Korea and the United States in the border city of Pocheon on December 29, 2023.
North Korea’s official news agency, KCNA, has written that the action is considered a reckless war maneuver.
“With the confrontational instinct ingrained in them, the puppets once again color the new year by making aggressive choices that trigger war,” wrote KCNA.(clue)
